Adobe Rent a Car Terms & Conditions

Rental Requirements

  1. Valid driver’s license with more than 2 consecutive years of issue. Valid for 180 days from the entrance to Costa Rica.
  2. A valid driver’s license. If it is not in the Latin alphabet or a digital license, it must be presented with the International License.
  3. Physically present the valid and original identity card and/or passport, in the case of the passport it must have the entry stamp to the country.
  4. Present Credit Card to cover the guarantee deposit for US$1,000 (only MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express are accepted). The Credit Card must bear the printed name of the cardholder and must be the same person who picks up the vehicle. We do not accept debit cards, cash or virtual credit cards.
  5. The minimum age to rent a car is 23 years.


  1. Rental period is 24 hours.
  2. After 4 hours of late car return, you will be charged with the daily rate.
  3. Cars cannot be taken out of Costa Rica.
  4. Additional drivers are allowed at an extra cost.
  5. Cash and debit card are not accepted for the deposit. Only credit card.
  6. Adobe Rent a Car offers meet and greet service at the airport when exact flight details are provided. Renter will be received at external arrival gates by an Adobe Rent a Car representative.
  7. When flight details are not provided, the customer may call upon arrival for free shuttle service available in San Jose Airport and in Liberia airport at the local number: 2542-4800 (San José) and 2667-0608 (Liberia) at office hours. When closed, please call emergency 24/7 number: 2542-4888.
  8. Complimentary delivery of the car to your hotel, within 12 miles from any office.
  9. The Liability Protection (PLI) is mandatory.
  10. The Car Protection (LDW) may be declined upon presentation of a letter from the credit card company that states coverage for a rental car in Costa Rica. Efective October 1st, 2021, VISA will not offer to its cardholders of Gold and Platinum cards the benefit of the collision damage waiver for the rental cars in Costa Rica. Therefore, if they wish to decline our LDW coverage, they will not be able to do so with a VISA credit card. Please consult: for further information.
  11. Extended Protection (SPP) is optional.
  12. One way rentals and drop off fees may apply. Consult:
  13. Free mileage for rentals less than 30 days.
  14. The maximum distance for a free delivery is 25 kms.

Request, Modify, Cancellation, No Show or Early Return Bookings


To make a reservation we need the following information:

Name and Surname
Car category
Date, hour and place of delivery (Hotel or Flight Number)
Date, hour and place of collection (Hotel or Flight Number)
Extra services to include, such as: extra coverages, accessories, drop off fees or one way rentals, etc.

Modifying bookings

A booking can be modified up to 72 hours before beginning the rental (upon availability) with no penalty. Changes in pick up location may have extra fees.

Cancellation or No-Show

Penalty of 2 days of rent without insurance, for late cancellations 72 hours before the start of the service, or for a No-Show. We will consider a No-Show when a client has 2 hours of delay picking up the car and has not contacted us.

Early Return

In the event that the rented vehicle is returned earlier than the agreed date, a partial refund applies.

Conditions of Payment

At the moment of the rental, the full rental cost, plus extra expenses will be charged to your credit card.

General Insurance and Coverage Conditions

Please refer to the Coverage section.

Violations of the Costa Rica Traffic Legislation are full responsibility of the rentee.

One-Way Rentals

In case you need one-way rentals, where you receive the car in one office and return in another, the following conditions apply:

Reservation is neccesary
Minimum rental period: 3 days
Charges apply. Please consult:
The car does not have authorization to leave the country

Additional Drivers

The renter/driver is free of charge; additional drivers have a surcharge of US$4 per day per driver. In all the cases the driver must have a driver license with at least 2 years of issue. The rental agreement only has one main driver included.

No smoking policy

It is strictly prohibited to smoke inside the car. In case of any smell, there will be a charge of at least $100.


All accessories are subject to availability. We recommend previous reservation.

Baby seat (under 12 years old or less than 110 cm height) US$3.39 per day
Children seat (under 12 years old or less than 145 cm height) US$1.13 per day
GPS US$10.17 per day US$250
Mobile Telephone with local prepaid card (60 min local calls) US$11.30 per rental
Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot US$11.30 per day US$100

Late returns

A 1-hour tolerance for late returns is granted. From 2-4 hours extra fees apply; after 4 hours delay, a full day is charged.

Fuel Charge

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel (please check if the car uses petrol-gasoline or diesel fuel), please returned as it was delivered.

If the car receives an incorrect fuel, all associated costs to correct the problem will be charged to the rentee.

Refueling charges will apply.

Extra fees or penalties

Loss/Steal of Car License plates has a replacement penalty from US$100.
Loss/Steal/Damage of car mandatory documents has a replacement penalty from US$100.
Loss/Steal of car keys has a replacement penalty from US$150 to US$500; if the car key holder is electronic or customized to the car rented a replacement penalty from US$300 applies.
US$100 penalty for excessive dirt.
US$100 penalty for smoking in the car.

    1. Hello Mr. Cook: yes, the pick up time has been changed to 9 am. Our representative will meet you in Sierpe dock.

  2. Hello, can I pay for the car with my visa debit card and when we pick up the car, can i use my mastercard credit card for the 1000 USD deposit?

    1. Hi Eva. Regretfully the credit card companies do not allow this. They request us that the deposit and payment has to be made with the same credit card brand.

    1. Hello Christopher: we do not have a key drop box. For those out of hours service, our Operation Department coordinates directly the way to drop the car.

    Soy costarricense viviendo en Canada. Necesito alquilar un vehiculo, sin embargo mi licencia Canadiense solamente tiene un ano de expedida. Antes de mudarme a Canada tenia mi licencia costarricense vigente, pero esta ya vencio y no tengo mas licencia tica. Es posible alquilar un carro en esas condiciones?


    1. Hola Melissa: ud. puede rentar con su licencia de conducir vigente, aunque sea de Canada, presentando su cédula o pasaporte costarricense.

Hello I am coming to Costa Rica on March 23rd (coming all the way from ireland) I have made a reservation with my visa Debit card with sufficient funds to cover for the rental + 1000 USD deposit, will this work ? Unfortunately I ordered a new credit card and wont receive it before i leave the country .

    Your webpage states that effective October 1, 2021, Visa will not offer the Collision Damage Waiver. I have an Alaska Airlines VISA card and called member services this week. They checked the status of this on my account and informed me that I do have Collision Damage Waiver coverage on my VISA. They will be providing with a letter showing proof of this prior to my trip in late April so that I can present proof of this to your company. Can I please have the extra insurance fees (LDW) taken off of my estimate?

    1. Hello Mirjam, right, the $ 1000 is a hold on the credit card for the guarantee deposit. Once you return the vehicle in the same conditions as given, we proceed with the release of the deposit.

  8. Hello, I will be visiting Costa Rica at the end of April and I am currently looking for a rental car. In reading the rental requirements, it states that a deposit of $1,000.00 on the credit card, is that accurate for USD?
