There are two international airports in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica Liberia Airport and the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near the capital city, San José.

The name of the airport in Liberia, Costa Rica, is Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport. It was named after the Costa Rican president, who served from 1974 to 1978 and played a pivotal role in the airport’s development into an international hub. Travelers can also look for the Liberia, Costa Rica airport code (LIR).

Located in Costa Rica’s northwestern Guanacaste Province, LIR is the country’s second-largest port of entry and follows SJO in the number of annual international arrivals. Today it is also commonly known as the Liberia International Airport for its location in the province’s capital city, Liberia.

As part of a $1.5 million project carried out by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Technical Council, significant improvements were recently made to the airport. The upgrades included repaving and repairs to the runway, expanded baggage claim areas, larger terminals and lounge areas, new restaurants, and more.

These developments boosted the airport’s capacity to handle up to 300,000 additional passengers each year. Today, the destination is increasingly popular among tourists wishing to visit the picturesque beaches and national parks nearby. In the first six months of 2019 alone, approximately 700,000 travelers flew into LIR, according to Costa Rica’s Board of Tourism (ICT).
