Safety First: Navigating Child Seat Laws

Costa Rica has strict traffic laws designed to keep children safe on the road. If you plan to rent a car, it is important to understand the country’s child seat and booster seat requirements. By law, all children under 12 years of age or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches (145 cm) must travel in an age- and size-appropriate child restraint system.
· The Breakdown: Babies up to one year old must ride in a rear-facing carrier. Toddlers aged 1 to 4 require a front-facing family car seat. Older kids need a specific car seat and booster depending on their weight and height.
· The Adobe Solution: To make your family trip easier, don’t haul bulky gear through the airport. Our car rental company provides clean, certified seats for a small daily fee. Just specify your child’s height and weight when booking.

Finding the Right Size: Cars That Fit Your Crew

Choosing from the available cars in Costa Rica can be tricky when you have extra gear.
· Intermediate SUVs: Is the perfect choice for small families. They offer ample trunk space, comfortable seating, and advanced safety features.
· Full Size Options: If you are traveling with three or more kids, look for a Full Size SUV or a passenger minivan. These vehicles give you the third-row seating and large cargo room needed for comfortable family travel.
Budgeting Without Surprises: Avoiding Hidden Fees
Nothing ruins a family vacation faster than unexpected costs at the rental car counter. Many parents search for a cheap rental car in Costa Rica online, only to find that mandatory legal insurance was left out of the quote.
· No Hidden Fees Policy: Adobe Rent a Car prides itself on transparent pricing. The rate you see online includes the legally required liability protection.
· Easy Deposits: We accept major credit cards for the security deposit, making the check-in process simple. Knowing your exact costs upfront helps you plan your Costa Rica family vacations with total peace of mind.
Driving Rules and Speed Limits for Parents
Keeping your family safe means understanding local driving laws. Costa Rica enforces its traffic laws strictly, especially on popular routes for family travel.
· Speed Limits: Speed limits change frequently and are posted in kilometers per hour, not miles per hour. Keep a close eye on signs when passing through school zones or small towns.
· Traffic Police: You may encounter routine police checkpoints along the highway. Don’t panic; this is normal for cars in Costa Rica. Just show the officer your passport with the entry stamp and your valid home driver’s license and you’ll be back to your family friendly adventure in no time.
· Radar & Speed Traps: Keep an eye out for traffic police stationed under trees on long stretches of road. They use speed detectors to catch speeding drivers. Always follow the posted signs to keep your family safe and prevent an unexpected fine from ruining your vacation budget.

Navigating and Mapping Your Route Effectively
Getting lost with tired kids is a situation every parent wants to avoid. Traditional paper maps aren’t enough when navigating a rental car in Costa Rica, though they are helpful. To find the most convenient and scenic family route make sure you use one of the following trusted platforms:
· Waze and Google Maps: Costa Rica relies heavily on digital navigation. Waze is incredibly accurate here because local drivers update it in real-time about traffic, accidents, and road hazards.
· Quick Tip for Car Rental Families- Offline Maps: Download offline maps on your phone before you start your family road trip. It helps you stay on track even in deep jungle areas!

Parking Safety at Beaches and Parks
When you arrive at a beautiful destination, you’ll want to jump out and enjoy. A few simple parking habits will keep your belongings secure throughout your family vacation.
· Official Parking Lots: Always look for official, guarded parking lots when visiting national parks or beach. If a guarded lot isn’t available, look for an attendant wearing a safety vest. These individuals, although informal, offer “guard service” for a small tip.
· Out of Sight: None the less, NEVER leave bags, passports, or electronic devices visible in your family car. Leave your belongings in the hotel safe. Otherwise, lock everything securely in the trunk before you head out so you can spend time making memories without worries.
FAQ’S
NO! you should never drive through rivers or directly on the sand. While a family road trip in a 4×4 SUV sounds adventurous, local rental rules strictly forbid driving through any body of water, on the beach, or any other unofficial road..
Water damage can completely ruin a family car and is not covered by any protection plan. Stick to established family routes and park in designated areas. If a rural road looks flooded or blocked by a river crossing, turn around and find a safer, family friendly detour.
If you are driving out of San José toward coastal destinations, you will encounter a few highway toll booths.
Most toll stations in Costa Rica accept local cash (Colones), small US dollar bills, and credit cards. But always keep Costa Rican Colones at hand, some of the smaller tolls booths ONLY accept cash.
Basic car rental requirements:
1. Minimum age to rent a car: 23 years.
2. Valid driver’s license issued more than 2 years ago. Valid for the legal term of your stay in Costa Rica as a tourist.
3. If the license is not in Latin alphabet, it must be presented along with an International Driver’s License. We do accept digital licenses.
4. Present a valid ID or passport with an entry stamp to the country.
5. Credit card required for a US$1,000 deposit (we accept MasterCard, VISA and American Express). The cardholder must be the same person picking up the vehicle.
6. We do not accept debit cards, cash, or virtual credit cards. If you decline rental car protection, you must use the same credit card. If you purchase the protection, you can use two credit cards, if they are from the same brand.
Important: You must physically present the original of both your ID and driver’s license in all cases. Photocopies or photos are not accepted.
Yes, you will find plenty of gas stations along Costa Rica’s main highways. However, once you venture onto rural family routes, stations become much scarcer, and many small towns do not have them at all.
To keep your family road trip stress-free, keep these quick tips in mind:
· The Half-Empty Rule: A good rule of thumb is to fill up your tank whenever it hits half empty. You don’t want to get caught looking for fuel with restless kids in the back.
· Enjoy Full-Service: Every gas station in Costa Rica is completely full-service. You do not pump your own fuel! A friendly attendant will pump it for you, and they can also check your tire pressure or engine fluids upon request.
· Cards are Welcome: Most stations across the country accept major credit cards. Nevertheless, it is always smart to carry a little local cash (Colones) just in case a rural station’s card machine loses its internet signal.
· Tipping Etiquette: While not mandatory, leaving a small tip (around 500 to 1,000 Colones, or $1 to $2 USD) for the attendant is a great way to show appreciation for their help.
Skip the familiar fast-food places and pull into a local soda (a traditional, mom-and-pop diner) along the road!
Eating at a soda is perfectly safe. In fact, Costa Rica has very high standards for food hygiene, making it one of the safest culinary destinations in Central America.
Stopping at a local soda is highly recommended for a family road trip for several reasons:
· Budget-Friendly: You can get a massive, healthy traditional plate called a casado (rice, beans, salad, plantains, and a protein) for just a few dollars.
· Kid-Approved Drinks: They serve fresh fruit juices (refrescos naturales) made from mango, passion fruit, or blackberry that the kids will absolutely love.
· A Real Break: These open-air diners offer the perfect spot to stretch your legs, use a restroom, and step away from the highway during a long road trip.
Choosing local sodas over generic fast food is a fantastic way to introduce your kids to the culture and add authentic flavor to your Costa Rica family vacations.
This makes a self-drive trip highly convenient, when you have chosen to skip Costa Rica vacations all inclusive family packages to explore on your own.
