Montezuma, Costa Rica

Montezuma is one of Costa Rica’s favorite bohemian beach getaways. The picturesque little town is located on the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula (Península de Nicoya) on the northwest Pacific Coast (Pacífico Central). Because of its steep cliffs and coastal forests, the town has remained relatively small and isolated. This adds to its remarkable pequeño pueblo charm.

Montezuma is famous for its waterfalls, especially the Montezuma Waterfall located on the north end of town. Visitors can access the falls from above or below. Getting there involves hiking through the jungle and shallow river crossings. Sturdy walking shoes and good physical condition are definitely recommended.

Another option to see the falls is by taking a thrilling canopy and zipline tour. There are actually three distinct falls you can visit along the same river. At the base of each is a refreshing pool where hot hikers can swim (piscina natural). Relax on the riverbank and take in the beauty and power of the falls.

Caution: Jumping from the falls is strictly prohibited. Several tourists have died over the years from slipping while climbing around the waterfalls or diving onto submerged rocks.

What to do in Montezuma

Montezuma is excellent for nature lovers who enjoy hiking and exploring. Because of the area’s geological history its beaches are all distinct. Hikers will encounter everything from red stone beaches and beaches full of seashells to pristine white sands beaches and more.

Approximately seven kilometers from town is one of Costa Rica’s original national parks. The Parque Nacional Cabo Blanco is open to visitors year-round. Well maintained trails lead visitors through the transitional and tropical dry forests where wildlife can be spotted. Several bird species live in the park in addition to monkeys, sloths, iguanas, peccaries, spotted deer, and other exotic animals.

Popular Montezuma tours include horseback riding, canopy adventures, and day trips to Isla Tortuga Island. Around the corner of the peninsula are the wildly popular beach towns of Santa Teresa and Mal País. Visiting the two hip surf meccas is a great day trip from Montezuma. The scenic drive takes only about 30 minutes.

Similar to Montezuma, each town offers plenty to do and see. Visitors will also find a fun and enticing array of local and international restaurants, cafes, and bars. Nightlife in Santa Teresa is exceptionally popular during the holiday season when tourism is at its peak.

Hotel en Montezuma

Its laid back and unassuming vibe is another reason why Montezuma is so popular. Visitors won’t find frilly five-star resorts or glitzy nightclubs. On the contrary, Montezuma hotels are straightforward, comfortable, and clean with a personalized touch.

Lodging options range from backpacker hostels to beautiful family-owned boutique hotels on the beach. Many locals offer yoga and wellness treatments.

The dry season between December and May is also the country’s peak tourist season.  It’s smart to book your hotel and the rental car ahead of time. The holiday season is very popular and it’s best to plan ahead to reserve your space.

Rental car advice

It’s easiest to rent a car before visiting Montezuma. There are Adobe Rent a Car offices just outside of both of the country’s international airports. The Juan Santamaria Airport office is located in Alajuela near the Capital San José. And the Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport office is located in Liberia in the northern province of Guanacaste.

If you’re traveling from San Jose, you’ll need to take the Naviera Tambor Ferry. It crosses the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera on the peninsula. The ferry departs from the northernmost tip of Puntarenas on the mainland. Tickets for the Tambor Ferry should be purchased ahead of time at QuickPayCR. From Paquera, the drive to Montezuma is a quick 45 minutes on well-paved roads.

You’ll also find a full-service Adobe office in Puntarenas, where you can rent a vehicle.

Is it safe to drive there? Yes! The drive to Montezuma involves well-paved highways and thoroughfares. Many of the previously dirt roads have recently been paved, making for a smooth ride from start to finish.

Do I need a 4WD? It’s best to rent an SUV or 4×4 vehicle when visiting the Nicoya Peninsula because of the sometimes steep and rugged terrain. You’ll never regret the added lift and traction, nor the peace of mind that comes with renting a reliable 4WD.

Flying to Montezuma

In-country flights combined with renting a car are a great option. And perfect for visitors without a lot of time to enjoy the country. In-country flights can be booked from either the Liberia International Airport (LIR) or the San Jose International Airport (SJO). The flight lands at the Tambor landing strip, which is the closest location to Montezuma.
