Tips for car renting in Puntarenas
Renting a car in Puntarenas, Costa Rica
The city of Puntarenas on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast has long been one of the country’s most important commercial seaports. It began in the early 1800s with coffee’s growing popularity on the international market. A great demand for the crop helped the country rise out of obscurity to become an important regional exporter.
By 1845 Puntarenas had become a strategic maritime seaport providing goods to Europe and the United States. Not long after the arrival of the railroad further facilitated commerce and the city flourished.
Coffee and other crops were originally carried by oxcart over the steep interior mountains to reach Puntarenas. A trip that took days or even weeks to accomplish. With the introduction of the railroad delivering merchandise to and from the fertile Central Valley and the port took just a few hours.

Puntarenas Ferry
The location of Puntarenas City is on a long and narrow peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of Nicoya. Two major ferries provide passage from the tip of the isthmus to the Nicoya Peninsula across the gulf. Both accommodate cars, passengers, and commercial vehicles.
The Tambor Ferry is the largest ferry service and provides multiple daily trips to and from the Port of Paquera. This route is best for travelers going to the peninsula’s southernmost destinations. These include the popular beach towns of Montezuma, Santa Teresa, and Mal Pais and the commercial town of Cobano.
The Coonatramar Ferry connects Puntarenas to the the town of Narajo further north on the western flank of the peninsula. Naranjo is considered the gateway to the towns and tourist destinations in the heart and central coast of the peninsula. These include Nicoya, Nosara, Samara, and others.
It’s best for visitors to buy their ferry tickets ahead of time as space is limited. Visit QuickpayCR.com to purchase tickets for the Tambor Ferry. Tickets to el Puerto Naranjo can be purchased directly on the Coonatramar website.
The Adobe Rent a Car fleet
We offer a large variety of vehicle types and models. Choose from trusted names like Hyundai, Ford, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. Our rental car fleet includes everything from compact sedans and 4x4s to full-size luxury SUVs, pickups, and passenger vans.
A 4WD vehicle is often the rental car of choice because of Costa Rica’s rugged terrain. If you’re only planning to visit nearby beaches or stay in the Greater Metropolitan Area a 4WD shouldn’t be necessary.
We have plenty of sedans and economy models to choose from. Let the Adobe agent know what your needs are and the size of your group. We’ll make sure you get the perfect car to meet your requirements.
Make sure to reserve ahead if you have a particular type of car in mind. Our mid-size 4x4s are the most popular and quantities are limited. Especially during the high season between December and April.
Try traveling outside of the peak tourist months if you’re looking for the best deal. The most inexpensive months to rent are May, June, September, and October.
You can also save money by opting for an economy or compact model. We want to make sure your budget will cover what’s most important – your trip!
