Tips for car renting in San Pedro
Visiting Costa Rica’s urban side
Bursting with youth and vitality, San Pedro is a popular tourist destination for travelers wanting to explore Costa Rica’s urban side. Although it is technically a city in itself, San Pedro blends seamlessly into the greater metropolitan area and is only a couple of kilometers east of downtown San José.
What gives the bustling metropolis its charm is its abundance and variety of restaurants, cafes, boutique shopping, and pubs. A result of its large population of students and young professionals.
Among the five universities within San Pedro’s city limits is the University of Costa Rica. The country’s biggest public higher education institution. Its sprawling campus, museums, theatre, and planetarium are a draw for visitors as well as students and are open to the public. Check online for visitation hours and special events.
Tips car rental, San Pedro, Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s public transportation system is big and complex, and visitors often find it difficult to navigate. Ambiguous street names combined with multiple companies operating different routes and schedules make bussing a challenge.
Without a doubt, renting a car is the easiest way to see Costa Rica’s urban and rural treasures. And it’s often the most affordable. Shuttles and domestic flights to and from each destination can get expensive. Add on the additional taxi fares once you’ve arrived and a sizable chunk of your vacation budget will be spent.
Renting a car is also the easiest way to social distance. Not only will your group’s “bubble” be protected from unseen risks, but you’ll also have your belongings and valuables within arm’s reach.
Rental car in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is full of car rental companies. But they’re not all the same. In fact, the biggest complaint visitors have about renting a car are the hidden fees many companies charge.
That’s why we at Adobe promise no surprises or hidden fees – ever! From online to walk-in reservations, every time you rent with us, you’ll know exactly what and why you are being charged.
We’re also one of Costa Rica’s oldest and largest car rental agencies and we know what our customers need and expect. We promise prompt, friendly, and professional customer service – always!
We can also help you plan your next trip to Costa Rica. Let us know when you’re coming, where you want to go, and what you plan to do. We’ll recommend the best type of car to match your itinerary.

What is required to rent a car in Costa Rica?
Renting a car in Costa Rica is similar to renting in other countries. Make sure to follow the tips below for renting with Adobe and we assure you the process will be quick and easy.
Drivers license:
You will need an original and valid driver’s license from your home country that has been active for more than two years.
You will need to present an international driver’s license If your license is not written in the Latin Alphabet. This includes alphabets such as in Hebrew, Arabic, or Mandarin.
Valid identification and Costa Rican visa:
You will need to present an original and valid passport (foreigners) or Cedula ID (nationals).
Your foreign driver’s license will be recognized as valid in Costa Rica only if the 90-day immigration permit (visa) in your passport has not expired.
**You must physically present both your ID and driver’s license. Photocopies or photographs are not accepted.
Mandatory security deposit
You will need a valid MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express credit card to cover the vehicle’s security deposit. If no additional fees or fines are incurred during the rental period, the full security deposit will be credited to your account within five business days.
Otherwise, the fees incurred will be subtracted from the deposit and the remaining balance credited to your account. Debit cards and cash are not accepted.
Age requirements
All registered drivers must be at least 23 years old. We do not have a maximum age limit.
Costa Rica’s mandatory insurance
Third-party insurance coverage is mandatory for all vehicle rentals in Costa Rica. Adobe’s Liability Protection Insurance (PLI) provides limited liability coverage for incidents involving third parties. The liability insurance daily rate is included in your rental agreement. It is not optional.
Additional rental coverage options
At Adobe we offer our clients professional coverage at reasonable and competitive rates with no hidden fees. When renting a car, you’ll be given the option of choosing the coverage that best fits your needs.
Check out our in-depth article on Adobe Rent a Car Insurance Coverage for detailed information.
Infant car seats
In Costa rica, children and infants under 12 years old are required to travel with an appropriate car seat. At Adobe we offer a selection of boosters and car seats at a reasonable daily rate.
Don’t forget to reserve your car seat when you make your reservation. Supply is limited. Especially during the peak tourist season between December and May, July, and August.
Driving in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a mountainous country with steep and windy roads. Weather conditions can also be extreme. Heavy rain and fog are common in many areas. Especially during the rainy season.
It’s important that our customers know that road conditions in Costa Rica may be different from what they’re used to back home. We highly recommend speaking with one of our bilingual agents for driving advice. For example, the best vehicle type to fit your travel plans.
We have a huge fleet of vehicles to choose from. Each car is less than two years old and impeccably maintained. You can choose from compact sedans and 4x4s to full size luxury SUVs, pickups, and vans.
Recommended extras
Navigating Costa Rica’s roads can be tricky. We highly recommend renting a WiFi hotspot or portable GPS.
You can connect up to five devices at once with each Adobe portable hotspot. This is the best way to have access to online navigational apps. WAZE is the app of choice in Costa Rica followed by Google MPA.
