Tips for car renting in Grecia
Rent a car in Grecia, Costa Rica, with Adobe
Grecia Canton in Alajuela Province is a prime example of rural Costa Rica. Within the canton’s boundaries are a handful of small towns nestled among the slopes and valleys of the Cordillera Central mountains.
The town of Grecia is a short 50 minutes (22km) from Juan Santamaria International Airport near the nation’s capital. The nearby Sarchi is an equally important commercial center for the province. Both attract visitors for their traditional craftmanship and natural beauty.
Grecia Canton is considered one of the best places to live for both locals and foreigners due to its mild climate and rural charm. It is also well situated near major highways connecting San Jose and the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts.

Grecia is conveniently located near the Pan American Highway Route 1. It is a scenic 23 km drive along Route 118 from the Adobe San Jose International Airport (SJO) office.
From the Adobe Liberia International Airport (LIR) office, Grecia is 195 km south off Route 1 (approximately 3:45 hours).
What to do in Grecia, Costa Rica
Despite its small size there’s plenty to do in and around Grecia.
Start with the town’s most notable centerpiece, the cathedral. The Church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a wonder of historical architecture. The wine colored monument appears to be made of brick or painted adobe. Upon closer inspection visitors will be surprised to find the church is made of metal.
The iron sheets used to build the church were imported from Belgium in1890.The neogothic building style of metal-forged architecture was a popular trend in Europe at the time. Iron was especially attractive in Costa Rica because of its resistance to humidity and earthquakes.
Despite the church’s formidable structure, the impressive building still boasts the delicate spires and stained-glass windows typical of the period.
The artisans of Grecia and Sarchi
Fans of Costa Rica’s craftmanship come from far and wide to purchase wooden furniture, rocking chairs, and artistry made in Sarchi and Grecia. Carpentry is a long-standing tradition in the region. The artform spans over one hundred years and is handed down from generation to generation.
There are several crafts factories and souvenir shops in both towns. There you can purchase authentic handicrafts and gifts or get a glimpse of Costa Rica’s colorful ox cart traditions.
Grecia’s natural bounty
Day trips to Grecia and neighboring towns are a popular way to experience Costa Rican culture while enjoying the outdoors and local cuisine.
The lush rolling hills and pastures of Alajuela Province are postcard perfect. Rich soil and a favorable climate nurture fields of coffee, sugarcane, and pineapple. Dairy cattle graze the green hillsides producing rich and flavorful milk for the region’s favorite cheeses and creams.
The Los Chorros Waterfalls are located a quick 15 minutes from Grecia and worth seeing. However, good physical condition is required to hike in and out of the municipal recreation park to see the falls. Don’t miss a refreshing dip in the river’s natural pools when the water isn’t too high.
Grecia Forest Reserve, or Children’s Forest, offers hiking trails and picnic kiosks. The park protects unique flora and fauna typical of the region surrounding Poas Volcano.
And for less strenuous activity, visit the Else Kientzler Gardens. The botanical park has over 2,000 species of tropical plants, peaceful walking trails, picnic areas, and a garden-side cafe.
