Tips for car renting in Ciudad Quesada
Tips for renting a car in Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica
The charming town of Ciudad Quesada (also known as San Carlos) is located on the verdant lowland plains of the Cordillera Central mountains in Alajuela Provence.
Its rich volcanic soil and temperate climate make the region one of Costa Rica’s most important for cattle ranching, dairy, and agriculture.
Ciudad Quesada isn’t widely known as a major tourist destination and most revenue comes from the cattle industry. Its reputation as the heart of Costa Rica’s cowboy country makes it a wonderful place to experience authentic Costa Rican culture.
Every April the town hosts a lively fair for buying and selling livestock. The festivities include horse parades, carnivals, traditional celebrations, and the opportunity to sample local cuisine. Don’t miss the town’s specialty string cheese.
Being one of the nation’s principal suppliers of beef, Ciudad Quesada also produces a wide range of leather goods. The region – including neighboring Guanacaste Province – is known for its expert leatherwork, including intricate saddles, equestrian gear, and artisan crafts.
Getting to Ciudad Quesada
Ciudad Quesada is centrally located between both of Costa Rica’s international airports. Juan Santamaria is near the Capital San José and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport is in Liberia.
It is a perfect stop off on the way to popular destinations like Arenal Volcano. Or a good option as a home base with affordable lodging – a smart way to visit multiple attractions without breaking the bank.
From the Adobe Rent a Car office in Alajuela (SJO) take Route 1 the Interamerican Highway northwest to Naranjo de Alajuela then Route 141 north to Ciudad Quesada. The drive covers approximately 95 km at takes about 2:45 hours.
From our Adobe Liberia office take Route 21 east then Route 1 the Interamerican Highway south to Canas then east on 142 past La Fortuna. Once you reach Route 4 head southeast to Ciudad Quesada. The drive covers 194 km and takes approximately 3:30 hours.
Things to do in Ciudad Quesada
Taking time to sit and relax in Ciudad Quesada’s Central Park is essential to get a feel for the town. At the north end of the park is the San Carlos Artisan Market where locals sell traditional artwork and barter over leather work and goods. Look for the beautifully crafted leather pieces popular as souvenirs.
Surrounding the park and its impressive headpiece Catedral San Carlos Borromeo are several local eateries serving traditional fare. Don’t miss trying the locally produced cheeses and creams.
Nearby Juan Castro Blanco National Park is renowned for its prolific bird species, wildlife, and mineral rich thermal springs. Three volcanoes are situated within the park’s 35,000-acre boundaries. An extensive trail system makes it possible to witness its diverse ecosystems as well as several archaeological sites.
The La Marina Wildlife Rescue Center harbors and rehabilitates injured birds and animals. Visitors can view the center’s wild inhabitants and learn about efforts to help protect Costa Rica’s fauna through education, breeding, and social outreach. Among La Marina’s residents are monkeys, tapirs, macaws, wild cats, turtles, and several types of reptiles.
