For a look into Costa Rica’s cultural heartland head to Cartago Province. Cartago holds considerable historical and sentimental significance. Despite being the smallest of seven provinces and landlocked in the country’s center.
Cartago was the first Spanish settlement and the colonial capital until 1823. Once the nation gained independence from Spain the capital was moved to San José.
Much of the Cartago’s colonial charm was lost after a string of earthquakes destroyed several of its original monuments. Yet evidence of its old beauty remains. One example is Las Ruinas de la Parroquia. The allegedly haunted ruins of a religious convent built in 1575 and destroyed in the terrible earthquake of 1841.
Other famous landmarks include the Basilica of our Lady of the Angels. The large and impressive church is the destination of an annual religious pilgrimage known as la Romeria. Every August thousands of devotees make the trek across the rolling mountains of the Central Valley to pay homage to la Negrita. A black statue of the Madonna and child housed within the church.
