Cartago held that distinction from 1574-1824.<\/p>\n<h3>Bas\u00edlica de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Los \u00c1ngeles<\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s not a ton to do in Cartago these days, but we do recommend a stop at the Byzantine-style <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g309231-d309480-Reviews-Our_Lady_of_the_Angels_Basilica_Basilica_de_Nuestra_Senora_de_Los_Angeles-Cartago_.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bas\u00edlica de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Los \u00c1ngeles<\/a>. The Bas\u00edlica is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the center of the city. Every year, 2.5 million Costa Ricans make a pilgrimage here and crawl on their knees to the altar to demonstrate their piety.<\/p>\n<h3>Trapp Family Country Inn<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s always a good idea to book your last hotel within an hour of the airport \u2013 you just never know in Costa Rica. If you&#8217;ve got a super early \ufb02ight and want to deal with as few hassles as possible, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trappfamilycostarica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trapp Family Country Inn<\/a> is a hacienda style lodge just a coconut&#8217;s toss (well, 2 kilometers) from the international airport. There&#8217;s a nice pool and the property is replete with \ufb01g and bougainvillea.<\/p>\n<h3>Po\u00e1s Region<\/h3>\n<p>If your \ufb02ight isn&#8217;t until, say, 3pm, there are many Central Valley hotels in neighboring suburbs and even in the mountains \u2013 particularly in the Po\u00e1s region.<\/p>\n<p>Our choice here is Peace Lodge and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallgardens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Waterfall Gardens<\/a>, an imaginative land of cloud forest, rescued animals and waterfalls with interior design straight out of a fairytale. Every villa o\ufb00ers a Jacuzzi tub on the balcony, and the cavelike showers have a waterfall option.<\/p>\n<p>While you&#8217;re in the Po\u00e1s region, you can also visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Po%C3%A1s_Volcano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Po\u00e1s Volcano<\/a>. It only requires a short hike to its enormous, water-\ufb01lled crater (go early in the morning for the best chance for a cloudless view).<\/p>\n<p>And the best lunch spot, a French place called Colbert Restaurant, serves up homemade pat\u00e9 and creamy pastas.<\/p>\n<h3>Xandari Resort Hotel &amp; Spa<\/h3>\n<p>Another great mountain option is Alajuela&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xandari.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xandari Resort Hotel &amp; Spa<\/a>, an artsy stay with a highly recommended &#8220;Welcome to Paradise&#8221; massage, which includes champagne, tropical fruit and private Jacuzzi time with a partner.<\/p>\n<p>The upscale restaurant here is one of the best in the country, but if you&#8217;re craving something a bit more a\ufb00ordable, Jalape\u00f1os Central in Alajuela is the place to be.
