Although it&#8217;s not a main attraction in the country \u2013 many tourists try to escape the \ufb02at architecture and honking traffic as quickly as possible. But linger a while, and you&#8217;ll \ufb01nd that this metropolis of 1.5+ million people, with its historic neighborhoods, world-class restaurants and friendly inhabitants, is actually a pretty inspired place. Here are our top hotel recs, along with the best stuff to see and eat in the vicinity:<\/p>\n<h2>Grano de Oro<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotelgranodeoro.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hotel Grano de Oro<\/a> is a converted Victorian mansion with lavish adornments, bubbling fountains and two rooftop Jacuzzis. The hotel restaurant is excellent (especially the signature macadamia nut-encrusted sea bass) but for dinner we recommend Park Caf\u00e9. The chef studied under French legend J\u00f6el Robuchon, and the setting \u2013 an alfresco garden of international antiques \u2013 is exquisite.<\/p>\n<h2>Teatro Nacional<\/h2>\n<p>Time permitting, try to catch a performance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teatronacional.go.cr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Theater<\/a>, a neoclassical marvel with towering statues and an opulent upstairs parlor that can be toured by day. If you&#8217;ve left your car in the hotel lot, de\ufb01nitely partake in the theater caf\u00e9&#8217;s alcoholic coffee concoctions.<\/p>\n<h2>Mercado Central<\/h2>\n<p>This also allows a stroll through the bustling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g309293-d309495-Reviews-Central_Market_Mercado_Central-San_Jose_San_Jose_Metro_Province_of_San_Jose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mercado Central<\/a>, where people sell everything from boots to love potions. Also \u2013 I can&#8217;t stress this enough \u2013 get a dulce de leche churro from Crispy Churros across from the theater. Best $3 you will spend!<\/p>\n<h2>Feria Verde<\/h2>\n<p>If you are downtown on a Saturday, you must GPS yourself to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g309293-d2394960-Reviews-Feria_Verde_de_Aranjuez-San_Jose_San_Jose_Metro_Province_of_San_Jose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Feria Verde<\/a> (car entrance). This weekly farmer&#8217;s market and its live music, diverse produce and innovative breakfasts draw all the crunchy locals (and their dogs) for the city&#8217;s most iconic event.<\/p>\n<h2>Hotel Don Carlos<\/h2>\n<p>We recommend you stay at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doncarloshotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hotel Don Carlos<\/a>, the former home of President Tom\u00e1s Guardia, you&#8217;ll be surrounded by gorgeous murals and cultural artifacts and conveniently located in historic Barrio Am\u00f3n, near many attractions and restaurants.<\/p>\n<h2>Museums<\/h2>\n<p>If you have time, we recommend exploring the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/museosdelbancocentral.org\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museo de Oro<\/a>&#8221; (Gold Museum) or the recently reopened &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g309293-d303010-Reviews-Jade_Museum-San_Jose_San_Jose_Metro_Province_of_San_Jose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museo de Jade<\/a>&#8221; (Jade Museum) to get a sense of the region&#8217;s pre-Columbian history. Also be sure to saunter around the neighborhood, dipping in an out of art galleries and refurbished mansions. For hipster-watching and yummy cocktails, head for &#8220;Caf\u00e9 de los Deseos&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>Barrio Escalante<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to hit Barrio Escalante, the city&#8217;s up-and-coming gastronomic district, for craft beers and a farm-to-table meal at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticotimes.net\/2016\/03\/21\/video-rebooting-costa-rican-cuisine-al-mercat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Mercat<\/a> or R\u00e1vi Gastropub.
